SHANGHAI CONSULATE MOBBED BY 10,000

SHANGHAI, Saturday.

For three hours today 10,000 Chinese students demonstrated outside the British Consulate in Shanghai, shouting anti- British and anti-American slogans, and singing patriotic songs. Order was main- tained by 500 police, supported by armoured cars, who guarded the Consulate entrances.

The crowd dispersed after a deputation had been allowed to enter the Consulate grounds and hand a petition- believed to be in the form of an ultimatum -to the Consul-General.

Weary and shaken, all the British women and children evacuated from Shameen Island, Canton-still under martial law after yesterday's riots-arrived in Hong Kong by air today. They said that demon- strators, running wild, had reduced parts of Shameen to a shambles.”—Reuter.
